This binocular was presented to the director of a Dutch company in recognition of his 25 years service until 1939. I learn from an expert Zeiss repairer that the lens glass on the 7x50H is soft and easily scratched. He went so far as to say “the lenses are always scratched”, BUT there are no scratches on this example, so it is quite exceptional. When I showed it to him he said he had seen only one other in as good condition – that is owned by a collector in America. I think the owner always carried the binocular about in its case, which has taken the marks of use. However, in taking the binocular in and out of the case, the paint has been rubbed away in the two places shown on the centre lower edge of each prism plate (please see the photo of the lower side of the binocular). The leather on this binocular appears still as new, but the paint is ageing on the struts to the bending bar.The view through this binocular is as good and bright as when it was new. The porro-2 prism construction involved much hand work so it was very expensive – in the 1930s this was the most expensive handheld Zeiss binocular – costing 45 in the UK .
So I believe this to be a very rare opportunity, perhaps a unique one, to obtain this famous model in such good condition.
