LARGE RYLAND & SON Ltd BRASS & LEATHER CLAD SPOTTING TELESCOPE for FIELD ARTILLERY & GENERAL STAFF LONDON 1916An excellent example of a very powerful field telescope of the type which had originally been developed for use during the Second Boer War. The optics are astonishing and it delivers sharp and precise images over very long distances. It would be ideal for Safari use. It has the original black painted brass mounting bracket attached for connection to a tripod mount.DESCRIPTION:Makers Marks:Broad ArrowTel. F.A.(Mk. IV) & Gen. StaffRYLAND & SON Ltd. LONDON1916 / No. 1.088The leather barrel, sun-shield and lens cap also bear impressed War Department Broad Arrow marks
The engineering is of the highest quality as is demonstrated by the ease of operation of the tubes and the precision of the threads which facilitates disassembly for cleaning. The optics are stunning and adjustment is simple. Focusing is precise and the images sharp. This is an instrument usable over immensely long distances.* Removable sun-shield. The section of the barrel it is mounted on is also threaded and could be removed for maintenance purposes if required.* Two Draw brass tubular construction. * Magnification 60x* Achromatic Objective or Field Lens 2.25 / 55mm in diameter. Twin elements – the crown and flint glass lenses – are separable for cleaning.* Schryle-Huygens 4 lens configuration mounted in the First Draw.
OPERATION:After fully extending the telescope, distance focusing is by pushing in the First Draw. CONDITION:Outstandingly good for the period. The 2.25 Twin separable element lens is fully intact and easily removable for cleaning. The tube connecting threads are also easy to disassemble. FAULTS:None to the telescope apart from some slight losses of paint to the blackened sections of the eye-piece and around the Objective Lens mount. The following points about the leather work should be noted:* Some very slight scuffing to the leather body and lens protection cap consistent with age and use.* Minor indentations and some slight colour fading consistent with age and use.Overall, however, the leather sections are cosmetically excellent with a fine patination and rich colour tones.
CONSTRUCTION / ASSEMBLYAfter unthreading the eye-piece, a 1.75brass cartridge can be removed from the first draw. Lenses 1 & 2 areindividuallythreaded into this cartridge. The objective lens (2) is approximately 1 & 3/8 / 30mm Lenses 3 & 4 are mounted in 3 brass cartridge connected by threading into a 6 brass cartridge. These are accessible when the First and Second Draws are separated. The 2.25 Achromatic Objective or Field lens, protected by the leather end-cap, is located in the main body of the telescope. The mount is easily removable from the barrel without the need to remove the sun-shade first
All lenses are present, intact and clear. The 5 sunshield for the Objective / Field Lens is firm and positive in movement. The telescope comes complete with the sound original, well-polished leather cladding to the barrel, together with an attached objective lens cover. DIMENSIONS:Fully retracted: 22.25 / 56.5cmFully extended: 47.25 / 120cmFully extended: (including the 5 / 12.5cm sunshade for the field lens): 52 / 132cmFirst Draw: 12 Second Draw: 16Barrel : 20.5 Sun-shield: 5WEIGHT: 2.833kg
