The ‘Dobsonian’ mount means that the telescope can be placed on any convenient flat surface (such as a garden table) and this will give an instant and very stable positioning of the scope. A built-in compass means you can quickly identify the North or ‘Pole’ star and you are all set to go. Included is a useful red dot viewfinder pointer which assists when attempting to view a particular celestial object.The 114/500 Compact is a reflecting telescope that gives a compact size and the optics give very clear images with no colour ‘fringing’. When looking at the moon, the wide aperture can mean that the image is too bright, making prolonged viewing uncomfortable. It is therefore supplied with a special ‘moon filter’ which can be attached to reduce the light reaching your eyes.This model comes complete with two eyepieces which allow the user to choose the levels of magnification from 25x to 83x. Also included is a ‘Barlow’ lens which increases the magnification by a factor of two, meaning the maximum reach is 167x. If identifying the constellations seems a little daunting, the 114/500comes with a specialised computer programme which, when viewed on a laptop or PC, gives an amazing 3D view of the stars and allows the user to identify up to one million items of interest in real-time.
