SwiftSuper Tecnar 8x 30 Binoculars. Designed in the US by Swift Sport Optics these binoculars (marked J-B251) were made in the1980’s by Tokyo-based TohoOptical Mfg. Co., Ltd. following Swift’s policyfrom the mid-1960’s onwards, to outsource manufacture to top Japaneseoptical firms. In the UK Swift binoculars of this era weredistributed by Pyser Optics, who through their defence contractsdivision supplied Swift binoculars and monoculars to UK armed forcesand security services, a testimony to their high quality. Constructionis of these particular glasses is to Swift’s usual high standards,built around a robust diecast alloy body with precision machinedsteel and alloy parts with few plastic components, optics fullycoated. The “US” style of body, without the separateobjective tubes found on European pattern glasses, makes both forgreater rigidity and also reduces size and weight. One of the bestfeatures of Swift binoculars, shared by this 8×30, is theirsuper-smooth centre focus with a real quality feel.This particular example is still in virtually “new”condition both optically and cosmetically. I bought the binocularsfrom a charity shop where, it appears, they were donated as anunwanted gift, never actually having been used. They still havetheir original Pyser UK instructions leaflet, all four lens caps,case, strap and lanyard, all in top condition. I can confirm thatoptics are also totally clear and faultless, just as when new. Theyfocus and view beautifully, the usual Swift quality shining through,collimation still as set in the factory. With their traditional shortfront-to-back porro-style body, they are nicely balanced, thetextured grey leather body covering making them very easy to hold and thewidely-spaced objectives giving the enhanced 3D stereoscopicview that no modern roof-prism glass can provide. So a beautifullypreserved pair of great classic Swift binoculars ready to give manyyears of enjoyable use. Dimensions:- length 115mm, width 170mm, height 55mm.
