Swift Pyser 7.5 x 42 British Military Monocular. Over the years small numbers of “British Army Swift Binoculars” have appeared on the the surplus market and on Ebay, usually rubber-armoured 7 x 50 centre focus types. These have generally been well-used examples bearing army tactical markings and were probably used in urban environments such as Northern Ireland at ranges shorter than the army’s fixed-focus open field types could cope with. Since 1972 there has been a marketing agreement between Swift Sports Optics, USA (www.swift-sportoptics.com) and the British optical specialist Pyser UK (www.pyseroptics.com). Pyser’s Defence & Security Division has for many years been a supplier to NATO and non NATO Armed Forces, Military and Special Force Units, UK Police Firearms, Counter Terror and other Specialist units globally.
And so it was not therefore surprising to find Pyser selling off surplus Swift-based military monoculars earlier this year, the scope for sale being one from a batch of four which I was lucky enough to secure and all of which I am now selling by individual auctions over the next few weeks. Literature provided by Pyser with the monoculars stated that they were based on the Swift “Derby” Model 755 7.5 x 42 individual-focus binocular. The Derby is a fairly compact glass and this monocular is 150mm/6″ overall length and weighs 370g/13ozs. There was no civilian monocular version of the Swift Model 755 that I am aware of and so these military scopes must have been specially commissioned from Swift. Also, in keeping with tactical scopes which might be used in non-regular warfare, the monoculars are totally without markings of any form, so as not to give away their national origins or those of their user. And for similar reasons, they are without military-type range finding reticles. Optics and construction of the monoculars are of a very high standard, with very smooth focus and comfortable rubber eyecups which fold down for use with spectacles/goggles. I have checked the scopes very carefully and all are still in “new” condition with crystal-clear optics and unmarked cosmetics. There is no case but I am including a new German leather lanyard and black velvet drawstring bag in each sale. An interesting item of British militaria and a really handy compact scope.
Each monocular will be carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price.
