Beside Jena and the Hessian region aroundWetzlar-Kassel; the little town of Rathenow, situated on the river Havel westof Berlin, developed from the end of the 19th century to an important centrefor optical development and production.Firmsas Busch, Ruka, Gebrder Nitschke, and many other little ones made Rathenow tobe the well regarded “Town of Optics” in pre-war Germany.
After WW2 all firms were expropriated. Busch undNitschke were 1948 merged to a “socially-owned enterprise”(Volkseigener Betrieb Rathenower Optische Werke, VEB ROW, mark “RO”or “ROW”) and since 1966 part of the large company “KombinatCarl-Zeiss-Jena”.
The smaller companies could continue to produceunder their own brand until 1958. Afterwards, they were incorporated by and byin the VEB Augenoptik Hermann Duncker and finally 1978 likewise part of the”Kombinat Carl-Zeiss-Jena”.

One of the smaller companies was Ruhnke OptikRathenow. The business of the optician Carl Ruhnke in Berlin was developingwell and soon after 1900 he built a factory in the near Rathenow producingopera glasses, binoculars, thermometers, barometers, magnifiers and so on. 1920the factory’s staff were increased to 200 employees.

Between the wars Ruhnke produced some less-knownbut well made civilian binoculars as the Televist 6x(24), Televist 8x(24),Televist 10x(30), Televist 12×30, Noctovist 8×30 (several variants) and therare but pretty impressive Noctovist 7×40 with wide angle eyepiece design.
