You are bidding for my trusty Meade 8 inch LX200GPS SCT telescope that has had a load of upgrades.
It works beautifully and I would love to keep it, but I have just taken leave of my senses and purchased a 14 inch RCX400!
The LX200 is in perfect optical and mechanical condition. Tracking and GoTo is functioning 100%. Collimation always stays spot-on, even when being transported around and the EMC optics produce stunning images.
During my ownership over the past six years I have upgraded the telescope with Bucks Stainless Steel Precision Gears and the “EZ Clutch” dry clutch system from Peterson Engineering in the States.
Also, the focusser for the main mirror has been upgraded to a FeatherTouch micro-focusser from Starlight Instruments.
That’s several hundred pounds worth of upgrades that really transform the performance of the scope, making it a pleasure to align and operate!
I even replaced all the bolts with stainless steel ones, sold as a complete kit from ScopeStuff.
The telescope is protected by a top-quality foam-lined flight case that has handles at either end and wheels at one end so it can be easily managed by one or two people. The case has a little extra length so that the longer body of the FeatherTouch focusser clears the insides and there is room to leave accessories like a diagonal permanently attached to the back.
Included in the auction is the original 1.25 inch visual back, the Autostar II hand controller, a 12V DC power lead terminated in a standard cigarette lighter plug, the RS-232 serial lead with USB adaptor, the mounting bracket for the Autostar handbox, an Astro Systems scope coat, the original handbook and documentation for the Peterson Engineering upgrades.
Please note that the following items are NOT included:
1. There is no finder scope, although the mounting bracket for the standard Meade finder is present on the OTA. I was using a Baader VarioFinder which had its own mounting system.
2. There is no tripod as I was using a heavy-duty RCX400 tripod (which I am keeping for my new RCX400 as it was supplied without one). It would be simple to source a standard Meade Field Tripod or use a pier mounting. The base of the LX200 accepts a ½ inch UNC bolt, so you could even use a different make of tripod with a bit of ingenuity!
