TheKOWA brand was one of the first Japanese sourced prismatic `spottingscopes` brands, first appearing I think in the 1950`s. Thebrand has since then been at the forefront of optical designproducing both binoculars and scopes though they are probably betterknown for their spotting scopes especially in the U.K. Verypopular with birders, they have consistently been strong sellers dueto fine optical ability and good build quality. TheKOWA TSN 820rangesuffered from `sticky paint syndrome`, where after a few years, thegreen body finish and the black finish on the lens hood became soft, sticky andpasty.not nice!Kowa originally arranged re-paints but haven`t done so for a good fewyears now. Sowhat can be done?Some TSN 820ownerscleanoff the paint entirely, others havewrappedtheirscope in cling film! Ihave used two examples over the years, but they have been abandonedon my shelf waiting for me to do something, and during lockdown, Ifinally have! The scopes have been thoroughly masked up withautomotive quality masking materials; the sticky paint has beenslowly and carefully removed with meths and fine wire wool leaving aclean keyed finish.Ihave used a tough spray paint in a dark N.A.T.O. green a suitablyappropriate colour I believe. It has a matt grippy finish notperfect, but so much better than the appalling sticky paint! I haveno reason to believe that this paint will not last well, but I offerno guarantee! Thepictures include some shots of the original KOWA paint! Thescopeshighresolution opticsare clear and brightand themechanical operations are all smooth and pleasant to use.Alllens and body caps are present, as are the original KOWA boxes the one for the scope is now rather tatty.
