A pair of very old – possibly 1890;s or 1900’s – genuine antique binoculars.
The binoculars are marked “LEMAIRE FABT PARIS” and have the small bees logo on each eyepiece.
Lemaire was founded in 1846 in Paris, rue Oberkampf. 22 & 26 by Armand Lemaire. They produced a variety of optical apparatus including binoculars. Lemaire started exporting his goods all over the world and became one of the major world suppliers of binoculars. These ones were very popular with officers on both sides of the American Civil War. Armand Lemaire died in 1885 and his son in law Jean Baptiste Baille took over the running of the firm now called the Baille Lemaire group, which survived till 1955.
The brass body is on good condition. The extendable parts are intact, all the lenses and eye-pieces unscrew cleanly and the binoculars are in very good working condition.
