Carl Zeiss Jena “Telsexor” 16 x 40 Binoculars serial number 1094969 (1921). Made from 1919-32, the Telsexor was a high power binocular made for serious users and designed for long-range observation. Large 40mm objectives provided good light gathering and world-leading Zeiss optics ensured high power with no loss of definition or image distortion. Even to-day these glasses still impress with their distance-shrinking power and bright, clear image. This particular example is in fine original condition. Cosmetically paint is just showing the normal “brassing” i.e. pain loss on highspots. Leather is all present and undamged but slightly faded. ( See photos.) Optics are in very good order with no damage at all (chips, scratches or cracks) to any of the lenses or prisms. Optics score overall at about 90%. On reverse viewing, left optics are crystal-clear with just some tiny black specks (possibly of internal paint or sealant) visible. Right optics are reasonably clear with no fungus or dust but with a very light haze film on the prisms. None of this is visible in normal viewing or has any noticeable effect on the bright, pin-sharp image. Individual eye focussers are fully functional but rather stiff and the central bridge moves freely. And collimation is fine with no double-image or eyestrain. The binoculars have their original case bearing the Zeiss logo, together with case shoulder strap and lanyard with leather rainguard. Also included in the sale is a useful tripod clamp, apparently bought by the first American owner and of US manufacture ( “Snap-Lok” brand.) This has standard 1/4″ photographic bush and fixes easily to the binoculars centre spindle with a single screw which can be tightened with a small coin. It also has green baize padded jaws to protect the paint. (Tripod not included in sale.) The binoculars will be carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price.
