Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Binoctem 7 x 50 Multi-coated Binoculars and Case serial number 6882935 (1989.) Serious users (notably the military of all nations) regard the 7 x 50 as probably the best all-round binocular, combining enhanced low-light performance (in German “Nachtglas”) together with a wider angle of view and greater depth of field without refocusing compared with, for example, a 10 x 50. And it was the Binoctem 7 x 50 launched by Carl Zeiss in 1931 that introduced the format and remains one of finest designs. This particular late example is perhaps the ultimate Binoctem featuring as it does full T3M optical multi-coatings, a world first for East German Zeiss and still regarded highly for their high contrast and excellent colour rendition. For full details and specification please see the Zeiss catalogue page included in the photos.
This late production glass, made shortly before production in Jena finished, is probably one of the very best remaining examples. The binoculars are in mint, close new, condition, clearly having had very little use. Optics are perfect, totally clear, no hint of haze or dust and perfectly collimated. Lenses, prisms and optical coatings are pristine, no chips, scratches or cleaning marks. Focusing and right diopter adjustment are silk-smooth. Cosmetics are likewise immaculate, with unmarked paint and leather. The original grey velvet lined case is also in fine order and the binoculars still have their original case and strap are black leather binocular lanyard. The binoculars view beautifully and are generally a joy to handle and use. The binoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price. Postage:- UK Royal Mail Special Delivery 11. EU Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed 15, rest of world 25. Please see my other binoculars for sale, combined postage available. Note – payment or email contact is required from the winning bidder within 24 hours of auction end.
