Busch “cxn” Dienstglas 10 x 50 German WW2 binoculars serial number 400519. This is the rare version of the Busch Dienstglas 10 x 50 with the “stepped” objective barrels – see Dr.Hans Seeger’s grey book p.106. It is a heavy binocular made mainly of steel and with a durable black crackle-finish paint covering. Markings are “cxn”, milcode for Emil Busch A-G, Optische Industrie, Rathenow and with a triangle indicating low temperature lubricant. The unusual objective barrel design is found on no other German glass of that era. These binoculars and their case are in very sound, totally original unrestored condition. Optics are excellent – crystal-clear, no fungus, haze or dust and perfectly collimated. Individual eyepiece focusing works easily and the central hinge moves smoothly. Dr. Seeger describes these as “wide angle” glasses and they certainly view very well indeed with a bright, clear image. Lenses are free from scratches, cracks or chips. There are two minor issues (see photos) which do not effect viewing. Firstly, there are some small chips on the edges of the prisms on the left side, but well clear of the central optical path. Secondly, there is a “flower” pattern flaw in the right objective lens. These are quite common in older glasses and are due to the aging of the glass cement in the doublet lens. This can be remedied if desired by splitting/re-cementing the lens. Note that the bluish tinge in the photos is due to room reflections. The lenses are not coated and there is no reticle.
The original black leather case is of usual high quality German WW2 type. It has a separate sewn-in light brown kid leather lining with padded lid. It is fully marked (photo) with the maker’s name, the well-known firm of “Walter Winkler-Militareffekten Sattlewaren und Fabrik, Schonwalderstrasse, 101 – Berlin-Spandau”, date “1942” and Waffenamt stamp commencing “WaA”. On the fully working spring catch is stamped maker code “frn 41” for Federn-, Draht- und Metallwarenfabrik, Havel. The case has the usual military pattern belt loop and slings for the shoulder strap (also present.) The binoculars have their original black leather lanyard, removed for photography. So a very original and sound binocular/case combination and a fine addition to any collection.
The binoculars will be very carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured. I never end auctions early so there is no “buy-it-now” price. Postage:- UK Royal Mail Special Delivery 11. Europe Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed 15, rest of world 25. Note – payment or email contact is required from the winning bidder within 24 hours of auction end. ( Please let me know if you will be on holiday etc. )
