BROADHURST CLARKSON STALKING / SAFARI TELESCOPE 40mm OBJECTIVE LENS. 3 DRAW with ADDITIONAL CALIBRATED PANCRATIC TUBE ENABLING MAGNIFICATION LEVELS OF 25, 30 35 & 40 to be set. A fairly compact telescope which lends itself easily to field use. All draws are firm and positive

BROADHURST CLARKSON 5 DRAW STALKING / SPORTING  TELESCOPE with a supplementary calibrated draw attached to the First Draw.  This permits the magnification to be set manually from 25x to 40x before or after focusing.
It dates from the inter-war period. Since these telescopes bear no serial numbers, dating them is difficult. From its general condition, it appears to date from the late 1920s or early 1930s.

Makers marks engraved to the Second Draw:
BROADHURST CLARKSON & CO. LTD   /   63 FARRINGDON ROAD   /  LONDON. E. C.
(This postal address became E.C.1 after 1917 but BC appear not to have modified their mark.)
Retailer’s mark engraved to the Second Draw: H. SALANSON & CO. LTD. BRISTOL & CARDIFF – a prestigious firm which supplied high quality optical equipment.
It appears to have ceased trading after its Bristol premises were bombed in 1942

*  Excellent original, unrestored condition
*  Achromatic 40 mm Objective or Field Lens.  Excellent condition. No chips or scratches.
*  The twin elements are easily separable for cleaning.
*  2.75 Leather-clad extending sunshield for Objective lens. It moves easily but positively.
*  Schryll-Huygens 4 Lens configuration mounted in brass cartridges in the First & Second Draws
*  All 4 lenses have individual threads and be removed for cleaning. All are perfect.
* The first pancratic tube allows variable magnification levels to be selected. It has calibration marks of 25 / 30 / 35 & 40
*  Brass tube construction with stitched brown leather covering.
*  All brass sections have their original darkened finish. There has been no restoration.
*  All images are precise, being sharp and clear, even in low level lighting conditions.
*  Most original stitching to the leatherwork sections is intact.
*  The movement of the tubes is still very firm and positive. The

CONDITION:
Absolutely excellent. Everything functions as it should. All lenses are present and intact. All threads are precise and easy to undo for routine maintenance. It delivers sharp and clear images over very long distances. The magnification of course is variable by manipulation of the first pancratic draw tube. What leather work remains is in sound and usable condition.

FAULTS: 

The leather cladding sections shows a little age- and use-related scuffing with a few scratches. A few stitches have separated on the cladding to the barrel.
There is no carrying strap  present. There are no lens covers and one carrying strap retaining loop is missing from the barrel.

SUMMARY:

An excellent and versatile, well-engineered instrument for the serious user or collector.  The  leatherwork conditionsuggests that this is a late 1920s or early 1930s model. It could just be earlier but it is unlikely to be pre- World War 1.
