RARE & HUGE WATSON & SONS, LONDON BRASS & LEATHER CLAD FIELD ARTILLERY SIGHTING TELESCOPE SECOND BOER WAR PERIOD. EARLY 20th CENTURYAn excellent example of this outstanding telescope which was developed for use during the Second Boer War. The optics are astonishing and it delivers sharp and precise images over very long distancesDESCRIPTION:Marked:Broad ArrowW. WATSON & SONSLONDON190027Intersecting Cross Combat Lances to Eye-pieceBroad Arrow Mark to Leather Cladding of Barrel
The engineering is of the highest quality as is demonstrated by the ease of operation of the tubes and the precision of the threads which facilitates disassembly for cleaning. The optics are stunning and adjustment is simple. Focusing is precise and the images sharp. This is an instrument usable over immensely long distances.* Removable sun-shield. The section of the barrel it is mounted on is also threaded and could be removed for maintenance purposes if required.* Two Draw brass tubular construction. * Magnification 60x* Achromatic Objective or Field Lens 2.25 in diameter. Twin elements – the crown and flint glass lenses – are separable for cleaning.* Schryle-Huygens 4 lens configuration mounted in Draw 1, Lenses 1 & 2 in a brass cartridge* Weight and length require two men and preferably a tripod to operate it.OPERATION:After fully extending the telescope, distance focusing is by pushing in the First Draw. CONDITION:Outstandingly good for the period. The 2.25 Twin element separable lens is without scratches. All other lenses are easily removable for cleaning since they are individually threaded in to the brass cartridges which contain them in the First Draw. All leather sections are intact but the stitching has suffered some deterioration as shown in the scans. The tube connecting threads are also easy to disassemble. Some minute flakes to edges of both components of the Achromatic Objective Lens. These have absolutely no effect on vision since the area of the flakes are completely masked by the objective lens mount. They are only visible when the twin component lens is disassembled for cleaning.
FAULTS:There are none of any significance to the telescope itself but the following points about the leather work should be noted:* Some scuffing and minor discolouration to the leather body and objective lens protection cap, consistent with age and use.* Missing leather cap to eyepiece. Missing leather strap and buckle which would have connected the originally two leather caps.* One leather harness retaining strap can be slid along the barrel owing to deterioration of the stitching where it was attached to the barrel. There is very slight distortion to the perimeter of the brass eye-piece,clearly visible on Scan 4.CONSTRUCTION / ASSEMBLYAfter unthreading the eye-piece, a brass cartridge can be removed from the first draw. Lenses 1 & 2 areindividuallythreaded into this cartridge.Lenses 3 & 4 are mounted in a fixed position further down the First Draw. The 2.25 Achromatic Objective or Field lens, protected by the leather end-cap, is located in the main body of the telescope. The mount is easily removable from the barrel without the need to remove the sun-shade firstIt is in excellent condition. All lenses are present, intact and clear. The 5 sunshield for the Objective / Field Lens is firm and positive in movement. The telescope comes complete with its original, well-polished leather cladding to the barrel. DIMENSIONS:Fully retracted: 21.75″ / 55cmFully extended: 47.25″ / 120cmFully extended: (including the 5 / 12.5cm sunshade for the field lens): 50.75″ / 129cmWEIGHT: 2.251kg (includingthe lens cap)SUMMARY:A rare andabsolutely outstanding instrument for the serious user orcollector.
