Bausch & Lomb 7×50 Mk28 Wide field Naval binocular. The Bausch & Lomb 7×50 Naval binocular is often regarded as the finest 7×50 binocular to come out of the States in the 40’s. And it was one of the first US binoculars to employ (from 1944) coated optics, this being one such example. Serial number on this binocular is VX6194 [ V = 1945, X61 = “BINOCULARS SPOTTING SCOPES AND RIFLE SCOPES”]. It comes with its original rubberised case made by the Hood Rubber Company, Watertown, Mass. (marked on the base.) It also has the dark green glare filters which clip onto the eyepieces. These are in good condition and work very well and there is a small pouch for them in the lid of the case. The factory hermetic sealing on this example is still intact meaning that the internal optics are totally clear, free from fungus and haze. Collimation is also perfect and all lenses and prisms undamaged. The individual eyepiece focussers and the central bridge move very smoothly. They are a formidable binoculars producing a very bright and clear image, the wide angle view impressive (10 degrees or 175.3m at 1000m.) And though they are heavy at nearly 3 pounds (1.37 kgs) they are nicely balanced and a real pleasure to use. The case is also extremely tough and in good, undamged condition, weighing 1lb 12ozs (800gms.) The only minor optical issue is cleaning marks on the eyepieces in the form of very light surface scratches and some loss of coating. The objective lenses are in excellent condition with no scratches. (Look very carefully and the coatings may have deteriorated slighty but it is hardly noticeable.) Cosmetics are average for an ex-military turned civilian glass. The leather covering is undamaged and in good order but paint scruffy with the navy wording erased from the right prism cover. Still a great classic binocular with impressive performance even by to-day’s standards. (The original lanyard has been lost but I am including a new black leather one in the sale.) Packed weight will be 2.5 kgs/6 lbs. Postage and packing. UK Parcelforce Express 48 10. EU Parcelforce Global Value 20, rest of world 40. Binoculars will be very well packed in a large, well padded box. No “buy-it-now” price as I never end auctions early.
