This nicely proportioned well preserved and unrestored 2 drawer Telescope by T Harris & Son was, it is believed from preliminary research, manufactured circa 1880 and there are indications that during its early life might have once belonged to a Kentish sea captain by the name of Cowling. The leather cladding which totally encases its main brass barrel is in remarkably good shape being scratch free and the two brass drawer tubes, which are tight and smooth in action, are virtually dent free apart from one very minor hard to see tiny kink. The several lenses, which do require professional cleaning, are thought to be original and when viewed provide a sharp non blurred field around the edge of the image seen. They are retained by fine knurled brass mounts. The 40mm objective lens is without its cap while the eyepiece lens is fully protected by a slider. The eyepiece drawer tube is clearly engraved T.HARRIS & SON LONDON DAY OR NIGHT in block capital type which may help to more accurately date the piece. Weight: 1100 grams. Size: 890mm open. 330mm closed. x 60mm diameter. As economic carriage insurance cannot be obtained on this vulnerable antique item collection only from Berkhamsted Herts is recommended but will send securely packed if required.
