For auction today is an unusual pair of German binoculars in terms of how they focus and very collectible, they are by C.P. Goerz of Berlin with a 9X magnification and were manufactured between 1897-1911 and it has what I thin is the production No. “22200.” The binoculars are made from aluminium and brass and and the barrels covered by a leather wrap, this covering is in very good condition but some of the black paintwork has evidence of wear and tear. The two thumb wheels move smoothly and focusing is ok but can be rather fiddly if you are not used to it, the top of the barrels near the eue pieces are stamped with “C.P.Goerz Berlin” on the other barrel marked with “Rieder, CPG, Binocle,” the strutt in between is marked with “9X” and the strutt below is marked with the production No.”22200.” Looking through the wrong way the lenses are a little cloudy and smudged and will need cleaning and the eye piece lenses are a little cloudy and will need cleaning. Some of the trieder series of binoculars, like this one, employed the rack and pinion central focus mechanism like this one for sale, these were the first prism binoculars may by Goerz. The leather case shows evidence of age and usage wear, there is scuff marks, scratches and other marks, the bottom buckle is present but the short strap is missing, it does have the shoulder neck strap like the binoculars. An interesting pair of binoculars and collectible but the lenses can do with some cleaning.
