For auction is a Georgian rare single draw Mahogany telescope by Matthew Berge London ( late Ramsden ).C. 1802.Lenses in great condition as is the tube with original brass lense cap. Signed near the eye piece ‘Berge, London, late Ramsden’.Approx 99.5 cm long when closed and approx 117.5 cm when open.The wooden cap over the eye piece isnt original but fits as great protection.Comes with a possibly later made Victorian weighted stand for displaying this beautiful telescope.Matthew Berge was an optician and mathematical instrument maker. Matthew worked for Jesse Ramsden who was possibly the best telescope maker of the 18th century. Berge was Ramsdens successor after Ramsden died in 1800 and during the transitional period is possibly when Berge was using the name Berge, late Ramsden. Berge was using his own name in London from 1802 – 1817.
