Maksutov Newtonian Reflector MAK 25-75 x 70 Zoom Telescope with filter and case. TheMatsutov (Mak) telescope was the invention of Russian opticalengineer and amateur astronomer DmitryDmitrievich Maksutov(1896-1968.) He patented the design in 1941 and it came into generaluse in the 1950’s. It is a very clever design which combines thebenefits of the Newtonion reflector and traditional refractortelescopes. The key feature is a meniscus lens that corrects the twotypes of optical aberration (coma and cromatic) often found in Newtonian reflectors. Maksutov further refined his design byfolding the lightpath in a Cassegrain configuration todramatically reduce the length of the tube ending up with a compactscope sealed against the elements which quickly gained popularityamong both terrestial and astronomer telescope users. It was in newcondition then, probably donated as an unwanted gift. I testedit a couple of times and I was very impressed both by the build qualityand optical performance, both excellent. But as my main interest is binoculars, it then went into my optical store.The body is tough ABS with alight grey textured finish. Optics are still perfect, the Newtonianmirror bright with no haze or deterioration to the silvering. Alllenses are also pristine. The comfortable rubber eyecup folds downfor spectacle wearers and both the main focus wheel and 25-75eyepiece “zoom” work smoothly. The image is very sharp and flat,minimum focus of this particular example tested this morning Iestimated as a useful (for birders) 8m/25ft. The scope has a standard1/4 tripod bush and comes with a padded nylon case with shoulderstrap, a blue eyepiece filter and lens caps – screw type for theobjective and two push on (one spare) caps for the eyepiece. Theeyepiece is removable and has a 28mm thread thatI think is the same as that on standard 1.25″ types. Thescope is of Chinese manufacture. A very versatile high-quality scopesuitable for a wide range of purposes.
