A World War 1 heavy artillery telescopic gunsight by W Ottway & Co Ltd of London. It has a beautifully bright image and crystal clear optics, and bears the maker’s mark, pattern number and 1917 date. Approx 60cm, 5kg. Based at the Orion Works, Ealing, Ottway & Co were makers of precision optical equipment including astronomical telescopes, survey instruments and microscopes. Like so many companies during World War 1, they shifted production to do what they could to help the war effort, making observation, reconnaissance and gun sighting equipment.
