WWII British Army Binoculars – 1938 – With Case & Sighting Graticule

These WWII binoculars are in good, but not perfect condition. They were made for the British Army in 1938, and have a serial number of  816. The maker is, “ROSS LONDON”.

The binoculars are in a British Army leather case with original leather shoulder strap. The case is marked “F.Ltd 1940” and “BINOCULARS PRISMATIC No 5 – CASE MK 1”. There are two loops at the back of case to attach it to a waist belt. Both the leather case and the shoulder strap are in very good condition.

The Sighting Graticule is in the right hand lens. Please see photograph 6 which is a hand drawn copy of how the Graticule looks when viewed through the lens.

The left arm of the binoculars is marked, “BINO PRISM No. 5. MK IIx7” “No. 816”.

The right arm is marked, “GRATICULES o APART and o, o AND 1o HIGH” – “ROSS LONDON” – “1938”.

The original Army issue webbing neck strap with small buckles, is attached to the binoculars.

The binoculars function smoothly and correctly. Each lens can be individually adjusted for optimal clarity of vision. Focusing is smooth. The internal lens’s are NOT crystal clear, but are useable. The bakelite eye cups are clean and free from chips or cracks; each eye cup has 3 tiny “grub screws”, all are present. The metal tube that protects the glass at the optical end also has a “grub screw”, on each side.

I cannot see any cracks or chips to the lens’s. Visibility through the right arm is clearer than through the left.

There is overall external paint loss due to wear and useage commensurate with 80 year old glasses (1938 – 2018) including war service.

As mentioned the “Sighting Graticule” is present, please photograph 6.

WWII British Army Binoculars – 1943 – With Case & Sighting Graticule

These WWII binoculars are in superb original condition. They were made for the British Army and are dated 1943. The maker is, “TAYLOR-HOBSON”. Attached to the binoculars is the original Army neck strap with small buckles still in place.

The binoculars have been well protected and cared for by it’s British Army issue webbing binocular case, with lid and brass press stud. The binocular case is dated 1944 and has a British military arrow mark. The case makers mark on the inside of the lid reads, “M W & S LTD”. Attached to case is the shoulder strap; there is wear on the shoulder strap and the makers mark and date on the strap are unreadable. Both the case and the shoulder strap are in fair used condition. All the betal fittings to the case and strap are present, including the 3 “C” clasps on the back of the case for attaching it to a waist belt. There are the faint remnants of hand applied military marks (numbers) on the lid of the case.

Both arms of the binoculars have a British Military arrow mark.

Markings on the left arm are, “O.S. 420. M.A. BINO PRISM No. 2 Mk. III x 6 No. 263981”.

Marked on the right arm is, “GRATICULES o APART and o, o AND 1o HIGH” plus “TAYLOR-HOBSON 1943”.

The 4 red “screws” on the objective end cover plates, are to seal the dessicator vents that facilitate the option to insert dry air into the binoculars to reduce condensation. I believe this facility was introduced on the Mk III’s only. Also, hand applied in Red close to the dessicator vents, is a single letter “W” which may be connected with the “dry air” facility?

There is a Sighting Graticule or Ranging Sight, in the right hand lens. Please see photograph 7; it is a hand drawn copy of how the Graticule looks when viewed through the lens.

The binoculars function smoothly and correctly. Focusing is good and the lens’s are clear, but not crystal. Each lens can be individually adjusted for optimal clarity of vision. There is no visible damage or wear, beyond minor usage, age and wear. Both bakelite eye cups are clean and free from chips and cracks.
