Rare Zeiss Armee-Modell 95 Swiss military binoculars c1897 with locking eye cupsThese are a rather rare set of the Swiss military version of the DF95 and ODF95 binoculars. These were made for export to the Swiss military and are essentially the same as the DF and ODF versions. They have the first form of the flat disc between the oculars; longitudinal knurling on the clamping screw; and the objective rim locking screws with washers. They also have the very scarce locking eye cups which were rejected on the DF and ODF models by the German military and recalled in 1898 to be replaced with standard eye cups. This particular pair are in excellent original condition although the eye cups have been replaced. High quality copies have been made which look very authentic and function perfectly. Once focussed as required, the lower knurled ring is gently turned to close the lower part of the cup tightly around the ocular tube. Although the paint is rubbed on the edges it is generally very good elsewhere. The solder-filled inscriptions are very clear. The leather covering is also very good although slightly shrunk. It has been removed and the underlying corrosion removed before being glued back on and patched in one place alongside the hinge. The lenses and prisms are clean, clear, and collimated. Individual focussing is smooth. Hinge movement and clamp are firm. The top plates are inscribed Carl Zeiss Jena D.R.P on the left and Armee-Modell 95 with the Swiss cross above and Vergr.=8. below on the right. The Swiss military serial number 48 is engraved on the flat washer between the oculars. The Zeiss serial number 4017 is stamped in the usual place on the edge of the hinge. The binoculars have what appears to be the original neck strap which is  in fair condition but should not be relied upon.Information of this model can be found in Hans Seegers blue book page 209 with further information on the special eye cups on pages 169 and 179.
