WWII Vintage Military Taylor Hobson No.2 Mk.II x6 Prismatic Binoculars 1941
These ruggedly built and heavy 75-year-old binoculars were built for field use in the Army during the second world war by the Leicester company Taylor Hobson in 1941. They bear the broad arrow on both sides, on the left the stamp: ‘O.S.108 M.A. BINO PRISM No2 MKII X6 No 202471’and on the right ‘GRATICULES 1/2 APART AND 1/4 1/2 AND 1 HIGH TAYLOR HOBSON 1941’. Each eye-piece focusses independently and the right has a reticule. There are chips to both eyepieces and wear to the paint all over (please examine images below). The coating over the – I assume – brass is somewhat cracked in some places but solidly attached all over. They move well – a little stiff perhaps – and collimation, as far as I can judge, seems fine. There are a few black specks visible through the lenses and a little bit of fogging and/or growth inside. They would benefit, I’m sure, from being professionally cleaned internally but actually still give an impressively crisp and clear view. There is what looks like a white paint mark with perhaps an acronym or code and a number on one objective end – but I can’t decipher it (if you can, do please let me know!).
