If You would like this item bid on it now as like me you may forget to come back and miss out on a fine item!!!Superb WW2 VintageBritish Royal Navy Issue Observation TelescopePattern 373BbyRoss of London EnglandDated 1943A superb and usable Ross of London telescope, original WW2 vintage with chromed brass single draw design, within original leather sheaf and objective lens case. The objective lens also has a slide spray shield to main body then single draw which is marked “Pattern 373B Ross London” 8801 serial number, British war office broad arrow or crowfoot and view check mark for year 1943. The instrument is in good working, it returns a fine sharp image. Making this a very useable item for either sailing, stalking or at the rifle range or a fine WW2 collectable.Personally I prefer the focus system on this instrument which operates by extending draw as normal then there are + and – markings on collar showing that the tube can be twisted to fine focus.
Andrew Ross (17981859) founded his company in 1830, from 1840 he began producing camera lenses signed “A. Ross”. During Andrew Ross’s lifetime, the company was one of the foremost lens manufacturers. After Andrew’s death in 1859 his son-in-law John Henry Dallmeyer left the firm to establish his own optical company in 1860 and the company was run by Ross’s son, Thomas, and became known as Ross & Co. By the 1890s was also making Zeiss and Goerz lenses under licence for
sale in the UK and the British Empire. Ross patented a Wide Angle lens design and Zeiss took this further to produce their EWA Protars, before World War 1 Ross and Zeiss worked quite closely together, but at the outbreak of War the British Government put Ross in control of the newly opened Carl Zeiss binocular and optical factory in Mill Hill, London.
Would make a fine gift Approximate Dimensions: 23 1/2″(59.7cm) fully extended 13″(33cm) closed Objective lens 1 5/8″(4cm) diameter
