Rare c.1915 Possibly WW1 LEMAIRE PARIS Multi-PowerMarine-Field-Theatre Binoculars Opera Glasses. Rare binoculars/fieldglasses/opera glasses by the French maker Lemaire (identified by the company’s trademark Bee). The patent forthe multi-magnification binoculars was obtained by Jean Babtiste Lamaire in1915.. Three poweroptions: “MARINE,” FIELD, and “THEATRE.” The marine lenses have the highest levelof magnification and a small field of vision, the Field lenses have mediumlevel of magnification and an intermediate field of vision, and the theatrelenses have the lowest level of magnification and the largest field ofvision. The brass moon-shaped knob on the side of the eye piece with theLemaire Bee, is used to change to the desired magnification power. Theknob for changing power magnifications is stamped with the Lemaire Beetrademark and also “3349” possibly meaning 3 lenses of 3X, 4X and 9X. The field glasses are about 5″ attheir widest point, and 7 1/2″ high when fully extended (not including thesleeves).. The front lenses havequite a bit of light scratching but this does not significantly impair the viewing. I tested them out and was able to distinguish individual peoplesitting on a bench at approximately 5/6 of a mile, (viewed from one ofEdinburghs hills to another and the distance measured on a map). I triedall three magnification settings and didnt detect any visual defects. Thefront of the binoculars have sleeves that can pull out and create shade, reducing glare on sunny days or next to water. One of thesleeves has lost its leather outer. . Overall the binoculars have a worn and aged appearance.. One barrel of thelenses has the initials SC. SIG. Cos inscribed. I would think that SC are theinitials of the owner and SIG. Cos stands for Signal Corps. There is also what appearsto be a military style arrow above the initials which suggests that thesebinoculars have seen active service. These markings appear to be hand cut. There is also a number 3 which appears machine stamped.
