A beautiful telescope marked Broadhurst Clarkson of London . Engraved and dated 1942. This 3 draw telescope has an extended length of approximately 35 inches. It is very well made the various sections slide smoothly and there is fine adjustment – though the magnification is huge so it takes a while to get used to it. With a bit of practise it is very effective and becomes easy to use.
This bears the name of London makers Broadhurst Clarkson – a company which still operates from Telescope House, 63 Farringdon Road, EC1, London. Historically – in 1750 Benjamin Martin established an instrument business with his son Joshua joining him in 1778. Joshua went on to patent a method for manufacturing brass tubing in 1782, the same year the firm was sold to Charles Tulley. The Tulley family ran the business through to 1844 when it was sold to Robert Mills who, in turn, sold on to Alexander Clarkson in 1873. They have made famous historical scopes and are part of our maritime, astronomical and military history – there are no serial numbers or other identification on the telescope so I do not know if it is authentic. All I can be sure of is that this is a high quality instrument with no significant damage and has clearly only had limited use. There are minor marks which I have photo’d but all of the knurling and brass work is excellent and the lenses are accurate. All the sections slide snugly, including the sunshade section. Eye piece is fine. All the lenses are fine.
Closed it measures 11″ 25cm, Fully extended with the shade section deployed 35″ 89cm. The big end is diameter 7cm and it weighs 1.07 kg which makes it entirely postable – UK mainland 3 carefully packaged – though this is not a delicate instrument it is definitely worth looking after.
