USSR ZOMZ Prism Monocular with variable magnification 12×40, 20×60, case, SUPERB
Made in Zagorsk, a town some 45 miles north east of Moscow, this monocular was manufactured by the Zagorski Optiko-Mekhanicheskii Zavod (Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant), abbreviated to ZOMZ (written in cyrillic characters as ) in 1987. Unusually for legacy companies from the former USSR, ZOMZ is still a going concern, although these days specialising in medical and scientific equipment…..
The Monocular (no.N8707995)
This good quality monocular is a two-stage instrument, with the main body having a lockable bayonet mount at the front end to which can be attached either a short objective (as per photo 3), with an objective diameter of 40mm and giving 12 x magnification and a 6 degree angle of field of view, or a long objective (as in photo 5) with a diameter of 60mm giving 20 x magnification and a 3 degree 34 minutes angle of field of view. Focusing is via a knurled wheel on the eyepiece (photo 2) giving 5 diopters adjustment. There is an orange filter for the eyepiece (see photos 1 and 9) which, whilst not mentioned in the instructions, I believe is for nightime viewing (or maybe bright sunlight ?). The monocular is supplied together with all original caps, certificate/instructions, all in an original leatherette case with adjustable carry strap.
Condition
Please study the photographs and note the following points…..
All optics are clean and clear, with no surface marks or scratches and no internal fungus.Focusing is smooth and sharp with both objectives.
Cosmetically the monocular shows no sign of previous use and is in as near mint condition as possible without being brand new (but it was made in 1987, so I have classed it as ‘used’ according to ebay’s classifications). The certificate/instruction booklet has a central lateral crease but is otherwise in complete original condition.
