Seben 1000mm / 203mm Newtonian Reflector Telescope
8″ Primary Mirror
plus Full Set of Accessories (Finderscope, Plossl Lenses, Barlow Lens, Erecting Lens, Seben-Branded Filters)
plus Equatorial Mount
plus Astronomy Book

Established, trustworthy manufacturer. Telescope shows signs of outdoor use, minor signs of wear, and also signs of having been left in storage for a long time – see below for full remarks.

Please understand that with *all* optical telescopes, it will feel like you are watching the sky through a straw. If you want a wider field of view, use binoculars.

Can send via national courier (UK only), but because this is a delicate item, l would prefer private courier (a friend who may be available for short range trips, at a rate of 0.60 per kilometre for the entire round trip, calculated via https://www.rac.co.uk/route-planner/ ) or collection in person. If it is sent by private courier or collected in person, it will be partly assembled, which should save you at least 30 minutes’ effort.

To select the private courier, please purchase, but rather than paying and selecting a delivery option, instead message me via eBay to request an invoice, and l shall add the private courier fee to the invoice.

Included:

* Optical tube assembly inc. viewfinder
* Plossl eyepiece lenses
* 2x Barlow lens
* 1.5x Erecting eyepiece
* 4 Seben-branded filters (not for solar observation)
* A Seben CLR filter (not for solar observation)
* Equatorial mount – you can point the telescope directly up, you can track a celestial object all night as it crosses the night sky
* Some sort of additional viewfinder for the mount, unsure what for but l’m guessing it’s to find the declination of a celestial object, or to find a celestial object with a specific declination?

Good Points:

– Well-known brand, hence you can assume some sort of quality control. Rejects from major brands like this often get sold on in bulk, re-branded, and so on.

– Many branded filters, many lenses

– There are no missing components – everything is there. There appears to be one missing fixture from the top of the brackets which hold the optical tube. In the pictures you can see one, near the spotting scope, it’s a serrated plastic wheel with a screw thread poking out through its centre. As you can see, there’s space for another one closer to you in that picture, but instead the space is empty. However, looking at the manual, it would seem that it’s meant to be like that. There’s nothing that obviously fits there. There’s certainly nothing left over from assembly.

– Original packaging still present

– Astronomy book included

– The equatorial mount lets you view straight up. You can’t do that with an alt-azimuth mount. Great for tracking that one special object.

General Information:
* Defects found (nothing major):

– Primary mirror needs cleaning – fortunately the mirror can be unscrewed from the back of the telescope so all you need is the know-how to clean the mirror like a pro. You’ll need to clean any reflector’s mirror sooner or later anyway.

– I’d imagine the secondary mirror needs cleaning too, but l haven’t actually seen the reflecting side of it.

– Optical tube has minor dents in it, presumably from the brackets being tighened too much on one or more occasions in the past. The dents do NOT affect the functioning of the telescope.

– The tripod legs can get slightly splayed outward if extended to the maximum. They have a lot of strain on them with the big heavy telescope sat on top, and when extended to the maximum, all the pressure goes to a joint whose size is minimised by the legs being extended to maximum. Hence the legs will likely appear a little splayed. Solution: try to avoid extending the legs to the maximum, bring them in about 5cm from maximum. You can get by without maximum extension, unless you really are very tall.

– There are numerous spots of rust on the telescope, the tripod, the fixtures and even rust stains on the polystyrene packaging. I would presume this happened because all that metal was left in storage for a long time.

– Instructions manual doesn’t actually tell you how to set the telescope and tripod up, but it’s quite intuitive and you need only look at the diagrams to figure it out. There are no missing components – everything is there.
