Scarce Russian Carl Zeiss St. Petersburg D.F. 6x binoculars earliest recorded
These are believed to be the earliest recorded Zeiss St. Petersburg D.F. 6x binoculars. They are inscribed No 29 on the top plate with a matching rim number of 159729. With a short run of possibly only 300 starting at rim number 159701, these would have been only the 29th pair made, dating them to 1908. These are in very good original condition. They have typically lost much of the black paint on the hinge frame and cover plate edges, but otherwise are good. The inscriptions are still clear. There may be places that have been overpainted but if they have, it would have been a long time ago. The eye cups appear to be original and are undamaged. The oculars focus smoothly. There are a few fine scratches on the surface of one ocular lens but all the other lenses and prisms are undamaged and clean. The fine ocular scratches have no undue effect on normal viewing which is clear and collimated. The binoculars come with an original leather neck strap which remains unusually soft and pliable.
