More description to follow.
Carl Zeiss first produced the Jena Septa, a batch of 300 in March 1936, a 7 X 50 model with Porro 11 prisms and a cemented field lens. They were first designed for the civilian market and Hitler was photographed using one.The civilian binoculars have a central adjustment and are 30/40% heavier than the military kind. By 1938, version Jena Septarem was produced, the 7 X 50H. The H signifies a vertical brightness ( HELLIGKEIT).Later military versions were marked D.F. 7 x 50H. They were designed to wear with gas masks. There was a 7 X 50 model made for navel use.As yet, I haven’t found a list of serial numbers to accurately say when these were produced but believe by the end of the World War II, production had ceased.
As one can see, the binoculars are in very good condition for their age.
Registration number 1699373. They bare the Negretti & ZAmbra, Holborn Circus, London, etched on the front bar. They are cased in a Negretti & Zambra binoculars case which have the name, D. Birley.
Britain helped develop some of the technology that came a part of the 7 X 50 and it may be that Negretti & ZAmbra bought these binoculars from Germany before WWII commenced as they supplied binoculars to our AdmiraltyIt is interesting to note that Geoffrey Harter Birley who started as a midshipman in WWI became a Commander of the HMS President in 1942. He worked for the Naval intelligence division for Naval & Marine staff. In the interwar years , he was assigned on a temporary basis to the RAF. A very interesting man!Could these binoculars have belonged to him and a relative, G. Birley inherited them when he died in 1978.I believe these binoculars to be in excellent condition. They focus well. The eye piece housing has very little black paint loss. The lenses appear to be clear with no dirt, moulding or misting apparent. The central and right adjustment wheels turn.
In totality, a most desirable and rare pair of binoculars. I wonder if Negretti & Zambra have an archive where one could confirm when and by whom these binoculars were bought.
As you may have gathered I am not an expert on binoculars. Feel free to email any queries and I and my husband will try our best to answer them, including more photosOnly open to UK MAINLAND BUYERS. BINOCULARS TO BE RETURNED BY THE SAME METHOD AND IN THE SAME CONDITION
