QUANTUM-5.2 20/40X100 SEMI-APO OBSERVATION BINOCULARS(with 45 ANGLED VIEWING)As new item but out of collimation with a small vertical error. At the 20x power a correctly fused image can be seen by most people when used terrestrially, but almost certainly not seen when used for astronomy (due to fewer visual cues). And at higher power, 40x, most people will fail to see a fused image. The size of the error is shown on the last photo: the background image shows a view over the binocular looking towards a ‘flower bucket’ about 30m distant (image centre). The inset photos, left and right show the vertical error (about 40mm over 30m). The pictures were taken by mounting a camera on our 26mm cross hair test eyepiece – this eyepiece is not included – (the dust seen is in the eyepiece not the binocular). Please note, a small parallax correction was made to take the left and right inset images owing to the short range of the target. May be repaired by competent person (or converted to two separate telescopes!) but is being sold as parts for spares or project use.Aside from the collimation issue, the optics in each individual barrel of the binocular are in as new condition with no signs of inclusions or other defects. Bodywork is also in as new perfect condition except for a small anomaly in the paintwork of the left-hand prism body (see photo). In the photo it looks like the paint is bubbling up due to corrosion or other sub-surface cause of poor adhesion – but the paint is sound and hard and the blemish seems more like a small foreign body embedded in the paint. Over the years we have seen similar blemishes and imperfections in this type of product and it is important to remember that this item is batch produced in small numbers and not mass produced. It is essentially, hand-built and minor defects like this are not uncommon. History: this item was received new by a dealer’s customer and the binocular was then returned to the brand importer as faulty.A small note about the included hard case. The case is as-new but is of poor construction and build quality. Why the manufacturer or even the importer should allow such an own goal by supplying this fine instrument with a carry case that is, to all intents, rubbish, is quite beyond us. The power of looks over function. We submit that the case is supplied free and you regard its value as such. It provides some good additional packaging – but you’ll trust the little handle to carry the binocular around at your own risk. We recommend you place a luggage strap around the case and only carry it with that strap.For those considering repair details and specifications are as follows:
