How to read binocular specifications

The Olympus 8×42 EXPS I Binoculars: Reach for the Stars with these Pro Grade Binoculars Aimed at Nature and Travel Lovers

These professional grade 8×42 EXPS I porro prism type binoculars are ideal for nature enthusiasts, stargazers and globetrotters, and come with high-grade optical components to ensure a perfect view even in low light conditions. Desirable qualities include fully multi-coated lenses for maximum image brightness and contrast, UV protection, plus high index BaK-4 prism for bright and crisp images that retain detail edge to edge. A non-slip rubberised coating and grip provides a sure hold. Peace of mind and years of pleasure are further guaranteed thanks to a 25-year European warranty.

Exit pupil explained

Delivers Optical Perfection, Whether Day or Night

This particular model offers an 8x magnification and a 42mm objective lens diameter. As it sounds, the 8x magnification produces an image that appears as if the user were eight times closer to their subject, while the objective lens diameter refers to how much light can be gathered to form that image. While for daytime use a lens diameter of 21 to 25mm is useful, for night-time viewing something between 35 to 50mm is recommended. Therefore the 42mm specification here indicates excellent suitability for low light visualisation.

Also worth considering for low light work is the exit pupil. Here that is 5.3mm, which for 8×42 binoculars is arrived at via 42 divided by 8 = 5.3 exit pupil in mm. Generally when there is less light around, binoculars with an exit pupil of 5 to 7mm are desirable. Another thing to take into account is the field of view, which here is a wide 114 metres, and is defined as the width of the viewable field at a distance of 1000m from the point of observation.

Angle of view

Versatile and Bright, these Binos Will Have You Reaching for the Stars

Offering an 8x magnification to bring faraway points of interest that much closer plus a 42mm objective lens diameter, the Olympus 8×42 EXPS I Binoculars incorporate fully multi coated lenses to deliver maximum image brightness, visual impact and image defining contrast.

Fast and easy focusing is provided courtesy of a large, centrally placed knob. Whats more the high index BaK-4 porro prisms naturally provide images that are crisp from edge to edge, while built-in dioptric correction adjusts to individual eyesight.

The 8×42 EXPS I model further sports a long 18mm eye relief for extra comfort, diopter adjustment for comfortable viewing without glasses, and offers a near focus distance of four metres.

Prism types explained

Engineered for Excellence, Built to Last

Boasting a new, ergonomic contoured design and weighing a solid feel 780g, the Olympus 8×42 EXPS I measurements are a manageable 187x130x57mm, while the package includes a neck strap, case and protective lens covers.

With a lens configuration of 7 elements in 5 groups, and a 18mm eye relief, the field of view at 1000m is 114m. The actual field of view is 6.5 while the apparent angle of view is 52.

These are also binoculars that will repay your original investment with years of good service. A case in point
