J.H.Steward 408 Strand LONDON – Fine Antique Deer Stalking Binocular double telescope
highest quality instrument with both focussing adjustment and inter ocular adjustment.
Antique, Mid 19th Century Binocular Telescopes, retailed by J.H.Steward, and manufactured by J.H.Steward Strand London. As is typical of this type of instrument of this era, this example ismanufactured from brass. Then covered in black leather. There is evidence of some damage to the leather and also one of the eyepieces has evidence of being knocked. Thereare intra Ocular, and focusing wheels,centrally placed. The optics are certainly usable and sharp with no external scratches to the lenses. There is evidence of a very small amount of internal oxide/dust to the lenses but the binoculars can certainly be used as is. The sliding extending Sunshields run smoothly. Retailers and makers name are inscribed to the eyepiece cups.
Fully extended, without deploying the Sunscreens, measures, 17.5, fully closed, 14. The objective lens is 1.75″. This type of instrument had many uses, including hunting and deer stalking, military, and examples were carried by Officers in the American Civil War.
The leather case has a leather repair panel to the base it is missing a Sam Browne stud and shoulder strap and would benefit from some refurbishment. It is alsomarked J.H.Steward STRAND 408 LONDON.
This is a very rare piece indeed and would be an excellent addition to the equipment of a deerstalker intent on using vintage quality items, or as part of a display collection. I have enabled eBay international shipping and I will ship to any participating country.
