J.H.Steward 408 Strand LONDON – Fine Antique Deer Stalking Binocular double telescope 1879
Superb High Quality Presentation Telescope From L.T. & P.M.T. – Augt 9th 1879 on one barrel to H. De S. Isaacson on the other barrel.
Amazing high quality instrument with both focussing adjustment and inter ocular adjustment.
Antique, Mid 19th Century Binocular Telescopes, retailed by J.H.Steward, and manufactured by J.H.Steward Strand London. As is typical of this type of instrument of this era, this example is manufactured from Aluminium to save weight. Then covered in brown/tan leather. All in very good condition, with no dings or dents, and sound stitching to the leather. There are intra Ocular, and focusing wheels, centrally placed. The optics are clear and sharp, with fine focus. The sliding extending Sunshields run smoothly. Retailers and makers name are inscribed to the eyepiece cups.J.H.Steward Optician LONDON – 406-457 Strand 7 Gracechurch St. Fully extended, without deploying the Sunscreens, measures, 11.50 , fully closed, 9.25. [ 29 cms and 23.5 cms]. The objective lens is 35 mms. Later fitted into a lined Case. This type of instrument had many uses, including military, and examples were carried by Officers in the American Civil War. Few have survived because of the Aluminium used in construction, and it is remarkable that this example is in such exceptional condition.
The leather case has a missing catch, missing top strap and a missing shoulder strap. It is marked J.H.Steward STRAND 408 LONDON.
