Hensoldt Wetzlar “Galyt” 4 x 40 binoculars serial number 754827(1954). These small Galilean binoculars were made from 1910-63 by the well respected firm of Moritz Hensoldt & Sons, Wetzlar, Germany, a worthy competitor to Carl Zeiss Jena, the two firms merging in the 1960’s with Hensoldt continuing to this day as the group’s military optics division. This is the later post-WW2 version of the Galyt, the earlier, simpler design having exposed objective lens tubes. Although a simple design, it was made to the same high optical standards as any other Hensoldt binocular and so views remarkably well, producing a bright, flat image with excellent edge definition, about a good as a Galilean glass can get. And a bonus is very light weight at just 375g (13 ozs). Internally these glasses are crystal-clear, just two lenses per side in the optics, both totally pristine. Collimation is perfect – not an issue generally with Galilean glasses. But focussing is very stiff. But they do still focus through their full range and they have such a great depth of field that they can, to some extent, be treated as a “fixed focus” type. (FOV 140m/1000m.) Cosmetics are average and they have been partly recovered. They have their original leather case, bearing the company logo and black leather binocular lanyard. A nice small binocular and probably very scarce now – I have only ever seen one other example of this later version. So an interesting addition to any Hensoldt collection.The binoculars will be carefully packed in a well padded box for dispatch and sent fully insured.
