Fabulous WWII vintage Ross MK IV 5×40 6E/383 binoculars, ex-RAF, with case
These binoculars were designed for aircraft and ship observation, particularly in low light conditions. The large rubber eye shield helped to reduce glare and retain night vision. The optics are coated -apparently the first British binoculars with this feature.
The binoculars are in excellent overall condition for their age but inevitably show some signs of use, mostly in the form of minor paint loss in areas subject to wear. The centre hinge mechanism works smoothly. The rubber eye shield is in sound, flexible, condition and works as it should.
It is hard to find optically clean examples of these binoculars, as many have fungal growth and separating prisms. These are in very nice shape and are fully useable -the glass is free from fungus, but does have some very faint cleaning marks, and being picky, the prisms have just the faintest trace of haze visible when shining a strong light through the binoculars from the eyepiece end. However, they are much better than most examples and the view they provide is excellent -the image is bright and contrasty, and the resolution of fine detail is really excellent.
They are complete with canvas neck strap and original furry-lined board case.
