This is a pair of BUSCH PRISMA-BINOCLE “TERLUX” D.R.G.M made by Emil Busch Optical Company in Germany. Their shape gives the impression they are Galilean, they are actually Porro-I with prisms. They have an intriguing stamp on the cross bar showing “C H Jose Bristol” which may have a connection with the Royal Navy as they were a popular glass with the RN during WW1, no doubt due to the superior image aquisition speed of their modern centre-focus mechanism. In 1906 advertising Admiral Lord Charles Beresford described the then-new Busch porro-1 binoculars as “The best glass I have ever used”.Emil Busch made porro-1 prism binoculars to this pattern commercially from 1907. Their serial number is 26062 which suggests they may be pre-WW1 according to information I have seen.Their weight is 750g. They were restored in 2014 by our local ex-Navy technician Mr. DJ Kerrige of Mairangi Bay, Auckland, New Zealand who had to come back from retirement for the NZ Navy as nobody else could perform this optical work!Mr. Kerrige’s invoice states:”Busch 10x40Full strip and clean optically and mechanically. Neutralised fungus etc. Rouged and polished all optics free of major stains. Lubricated movements. Refitted and packed all prisms for alignment – vertically. General lengthy improvements. Light wirebrushing of external surfaces. Some refinishing. Cleaned, collimated. $220.00″It’s interesting that Mr. Kerrige considered them to be 10x viewed on his collimator, as they are advertised as 9x power. In use they are remarkably sharp for an optic of this age with excellent resolution to the edge of the image circle. The extendable lens hoods work well in supressing flare on this uncoated design. Unusually the leather covering is intact and the bakelite eyecups are also intact. Adjustments are smooth and can be made easily. There are a few dust particles internally. The starting price reflects the cost of having them optically and mechanically restored.
