Large Antique Library Telescope by Dollond of London in Original Box with Tripod

A real cracker. Extended as in pictures 1 & 4, it’s about 102.5cm or 40 3/8″. Closed as in pictures 5 & 8, it’s about 96cm or 37 3/4″. You focus (extend) by turning the knob shown in picture 3.

All brass construction with original finish, there is paint loss as in picture 3 & note at the ends of the two brass scrapes above the bracket, there are two dings, otherwise very good for age.

Picture 6 shows the lens cap (2″ lens). Picture 9 shows the other end cap, reads “Dollond London” & the early serial No. “00669” (not clear in the picture but circled). The matching No. appears in the last picture.

The smaller brass tube is built in the sequence shown in picture 11. No lenses have chips or cracks but the one on the right of the picture looks dirty, slightly white. With the telescope built the image is good.

The last picture shows extra lenses. The one on the left reads “Astra” & is presumably for converting from terrestrial to celestial. The lens on the right is an opaque red, presumably for anyone silly enough to look at the sun.

A good mahogany box, about 78.5cm or 31″ long. There’s damage/loss to wood at the base/back right corner as looking in picture 10. I’ll re-shoot the last picture tomorrow & show the damage. Otherwise the box is solid but has no key.

DescriptionA Group of Four Antique Astronomical / Celestial / Solar Viewing Telescope Draws including Lenses etc, all for Auction together.

All Lenses including Internals in good order, except for one Dark Filter Cracked and one internal Lens with some surface wear, ( rubbing of the Eyepiece Sliding Shutter ) all as shown clearly, otherwise all good, none badly worn or scratched, none cracked or broken, all intact and firmly in situ, as shown.
Threads all run cleanly and tighten smoothly without stripping.

Includes two Dark Glass Filter Eyepieces, Eyepieces / Units are interchangeable where appropriate, all Eyepieces have the same Thread, all Tubes are the same Diameter.

All Internal Lens Components with their associated Fittings are present, as applicable all fit firmly on a Friction fit basis or run / tighten as designed on clean and strong Threads.

Tubes Patinated but with no major dents, no splits, structural issues or major damage as shown.
