My good friend over many a year and confined to watching our feathered friends in the garden. Failing eyesight and an unsteady hand, make a mockery of me trying to use my faithful Zeiss 10x50W’s and I now have to resort to using a tripod with a ‘bog standard’ 16 x 80mm spotting scope. No big deal, with the increased magnification helping me, despite the inferior lens quality – which would be wasted on me, anyway!
I always remember being stunned by the quality of the image these binoculars presented me with. Purchased second hand, with that niggling doubt as to whether I had purchased a pup! Again! Yes, I fell in to the trap and bought a fraudulant pair that had cracked prisms and was so mis-aligned as to be a write-off.
As I said, this pair suddenly made me appreciate what quality optics were all about. Being younger then, the impression was almost that of 3D imagery.
In my humble opinion, they remain as good now, as they were when I first tried them.
Hopefully, the attached photographs will assist you in eliminating the ‘fake’aspect. I can confirm the legends are indented – the tiny ‘DDR’ caused a moments panic, till I located it where it was least expected!
I have no doubt the optics will take your breath away – despite this elderly duo not having the benefit of being ‘Multi Coated’. I know, a matter of opinion!
Finally, some thoughts from an elderly wind bag regarding the pressures brought to bear, in moving you towards parting with hefty sums of money, in pursuit of optical perfection. Telescopes have been my love over many a year. Making them from scratch and trying out the different eyepiece configurations. It didn’t take me long, to realise my left and right eyes registered colours in a completely different way. That was when I decided a Swarovski or a Leica Spotting Scope, were ‘dead in the water’ as far as I was concerned. The money saved, was spent on more Bird Feeders and the respective feeds, whilst my 100 Helios Spotting Scope ‘does the biz!’
