Carl Zeiss Jena DDR “Septarem 7x40W Super S” wide-angle binoculars serial number 3624337 (1968). The Septarem 7x40W Super S was the civilian version of the legendary Zeiss “NVA DF 7×40” military binocular (made for the East German Army – “Nationale Volksarmee”), in turn widely regarded as one of the best binoculars ever made in Jena. Made in small numbers (7,500) for just two years (1968-69) with most being exported to the UK, the civilian Septarem used the same very high quality optical components as the military version but housed in an attractive body and converted to conventional centre focussing and right diopter adjustment, both of which work smoothly on this example. It retained the large wide-angle eyepieces with long eye relief but instead of flexible rubber eyecups, used unique pull-up metal eyepiece extensions so that persons not wearing spectacles (or gasmasks!) could use the binoculars comfortably. The pull-up eyepieces also function perfectly on this example – see photos. And finally all with a handsome red velvet lined leather case, also unique to the model (and included in this sale in good condition.) This example functions perfectly with crystal-clear optics free from fungus and haze and is nicely collimated i.e. no double image. All the special optical components (prisms, lenses and optical coatings) are undamaged. The only minor issue is a very small brown stain on the edge of a prism in the right optics, caused by contact with the steel clamping bar. This is only seen in reverse viewing and is invisible in normal use. The binoculars produce a very bright, pin-sharp image with real wide-angle coverage. They are relatively compact and very well balanced (like their military counterpart) and a real pleasure to use. These binoculars, however, have been well used and this is reflected in the less than perfect cosmetic condition (and, for instance, in the heavy wear on the focussing wheel ). And not all the paintwork may be original – please look at the photos carefully before bidding. They are still a very useable example of a rare and special classic Zeiss binocular and which would make a fine addition to any collection of the marque.
