Carl Zeiss Jena DDR “Jenoptem ” 7×50 binoculars serial number 3895939 ( 1971.) These binoculars are some of the last to be made to the original 1931 Carl Zeiss “Binoctem” 7×50 design before Zeiss DDR revised their binocular range for mass production in the mid 1970’s. These earlier models are therefore more likely to appeal to collectors and enthusiasts whereas general buyers will probably prefer the later multi-coated types with their marginally better low-light performance. This example is in excellent condition in every respect, having seen very little use. Optically they are faultless, crystal-clear internally and with pristine unmarked lenses, undamaged prisms and with no wear or cleaning marks to the blue optical coatings. All controls function very smoothly and collimation is perfect. The produce an exceptionally clear and sharp image, well up to legendary Carl Zeiss standard. Cosmetic condition is also excellent with hardly any signs of handling or use. But, of course, they are not new and should not be judged as such – there are bound to be some tiny flaws which I have missed. But they are in perfect working order, look superb and are a joy to use. They still have their original case, not in quite such good order but still very smart. There is also the case strap and special two-piece black leather Zeiss binocular leather lanyard. If you do not already have a classic-era Zeiss binocular, I strongly recommend this one. Naturally they will be very well packed in a large, well padded box.
