Carl Zeiss Jena DDR “Dekaris” Q1 10×50 individual eyepice focussing multi-coated binoculars serial number 4803748 (1978.) The Dekaris was the individual focus version of the Dekarem 10×50 centre focus binocular and one of the premium range of Zeiss DDR binoculars bearing the prestigeous “Q1” quality mark. This example also benefits from the T3M multi-coated optics, a world first for Zeiss DDR and optimised for viewing even in difficult, low light conditions. Individual eyepiece focussing has the advantage that the binoculars can be left focussed, always instantly ready for use and this makes them particularly popular with the military, police etc. Individual focussing is also particularly suited to astronomy and long-range observation where they can be kept focussed at infinity. There is also a slight weight saving and this type of glass is also easier to seal against ingress of water and dust.This particular example is optically excellent with no damge to any prisms, lenses or the T3M optical coatings. Internals are crystal-clear without any fungus or haze. There is a trace of dust on reverse viewing but this is not visible in normal use and has no effect on performance. The oculars have just been cleaned and re-packed with Nyogel 767A optical grease so they both focus very smoothly and the image is totally clear and collimation perfect. Optical performance is up to the usual high Carl Zeiss standard with a bright, pin-sharp image with a neutral colour balance. External condition is very good but not perfect as these binoculars have had to work for their living. There are some very small chips in the bakelite eyecups (see detailed photos of each) and a hairline crack in one. The paint is worn but still looks good. And the leather covering is undamaged and in good order. The central bridge is a bit stiff but should free with use. They have their original solid leather red velvet lined case, in very fine condition, together with its shoulder strap and black leather binocular lanyard. A premium Zeiss binocular ready to give many years of relaible and enjoyable use. They will be carefully packed in a well-padded box and sent fully insured. I am happy to post world-wide.
