3 DRAW Edwardian or Post WW1 Deer Stalking  / Spotting Telescope by Broadhurst Clarkson

MAKER’S MARKS

Engraved to the barrel of the First draw and read as follows:

BROADHURST CLARKSON & CO. LTD. / 63 FARRINGDON ROAD / LONDON. E. C

DESCRIPTION:

A delightful 3 Draw Deer Stalking / Spotting Telescope which is presented in good overall condition. It focuses superbly. The brass draw tubes show signs of light cleaning, particularly to the First draw – presumably in order to make the manufacturers’ engraved inscription more readable. The sections move smoothly and there is no damage or splitting to the tubes. The leather-clad barrel is highly polished and has all its original stitching intact.

Schryle-Huygens Four Lens Configuration housed within the First Draw.

When the distinctively shaped, black-coated eyepiece it is unscrewed, it provides access to removable Lenses Nos. 1 and 2 , both threaded  into a brass cartridge in the First Draw.

When the First Draw is disconnected from the Second Draw, access is provided to a second brass cartridge housing Lenses 3 & 4.

The objective achromatic lens has a diameter of 1 and 5/8ths”. When the Objective lens is removed it reveals the twin components of the achromatic lens, each with its own thread.

These can easily be separated for cleaning but when this is done, slight chipping is visible to the perimeter of the crown lens. This chipping is absolutely not visible when the telescope is in use since it is concealed by the lens mount and it does not in any way affect the optical properties of the crown lens. The other component of the achromatic lens is fully intact.

All pancratic tube lenses are in superb condition with no damage. All can easily be unscrewed for cleaning. The focusing is excellent as one would expect from this maker.

CONDITION :

Very good overall in full working order. All the lenses are present and clear. The optics are excellent. The tubes show no distortion and move easily. All sections and lenses can be easily disassembled for cleaning and maintenance. Focusing is very precise. It displays well because of the excellent state of preservation of the casing.

FAULTS:

There is no case present. Slight chipping is visible to one edge of the of the crown lens but it does not affect the functioning of the telescope in any way. One very minor indentation can be felt through the leather cladding to the main barrel but it is very slight and has not affected the smooth operation of the third draw tube.
