ANTIQUE VICTORIAN SINGLE DRAW OFFICER OF THE WATCH / MARINE TELESCOPE c. 1880MAKER’S MARKS:   None apparentDESCRIPTION:Brass tube construction. It is in pretty original and unrestored condition. The single draw operates smoothly, thus enabling fairly precise focusing. Four lenses are located in the draw which, unusually, unscrews also in the centre to provide access to Lenses 3 & 4.The swivelling cover is missing from the threaded eye-piece. When the eyepiece is removed, it provides access for cleaning to Lens 1 fitted in a threaded mount which is black coated on both sides. When unscrewed the presence of Lens 2 in a fixed position in the first draw can be observed. It is cleanable from the eye-piece end. When the first draw is unscrewed in the middle at the virtually invisible precision threaded joint, access is gained to Lenses 3 & 4, which are located in a removable brass cartridge located in the first draw. When this cartridge is removed, access for cleaning to the other side of Lens 2 is also provided. Both lenses 3 & 4 are in threaded mounts, removable for cleaning.
The Objective lens is 1 and 1 eighth” in diameter. Both it and the mount it is set in are threaded and easily removable.CONDITION:
All threads are good. There is no splitting to the tubes which move smoothly and there is no significant “play”in the movement. All lenses are present, undamaged and clear. The focussing is excellent and of a fairly high magnification.
Excellent overall. It is a precision instrument in fine working order and disassembles easily for maintenance. Although it does not bear any maker’s marks, it has obviously been built to exacting Admiralty standards.

FAULTS:No dust slide to eyepiece. Possibly missing a brass push-on cover got the Objective lens since most telescopes of the period were equipped with covers of this type. Some minor indentations to both the draw and barrel. Age-related scuffing to the leather covering of the barrel.

DIMENSIONS:
Fully retracted:  14.5″  /  37cm
Fully extended:  25.5″ / 65cm
WEIGHT: 478g
In good overall and original condition with the original stitching to the leather intact. None of the external brass sections have been cleaned. It is a high-precision instrument which functions well. It would make a good addition to any collection of period telescopes.
