Antique CARL ZEISS Jena DRP Feldstecher Binoculars Fernglas EARLY – #8169 c.1897Click images to enlargeDescriptionRef: DUI am offering for auction a very CARLZEISS Feldstecher 8x Binocular, which comes in a hard leather case.
It has obviously seen some use, but for the age is in pretty good condition and of a very useful size. It carries the Serial Number 8169, which dates it to about 1897.
The binocular is marked Carl Zeiss, Jena, DRP on one prism plate and Feldstecher Vergr= 8 on the other. The objective lenses have diameter of 20mm, so this version is 8×20 and has flat prism covers. The binocular has individual eyepiece focusing, which both work well, with each rotating smoothly and fully in both directions. Both eyecups look original, which is quite unusual for a binocular of this age and both are in great condition, with just a few fine surface scratches and superficial marks (see photos).
Considering the size of the objectives, imaging is surprisingly bright and externally, the lenses are in good condition with no major scratches; certainly no chips or cracks. Collimation is also good, with no chips or cracks to the prisms, but there are quite a few specks and marks internally, so the lenses and prisms would certainly benefit from a clean and polish.
As the optics are not coated, they would almost certainly clean up very nicely and with a basic service be brought back to a very good usable condition. Cosmetic condition is pretty good. The leather grip coatings are in reasonably good condition, with just typical shrinkage, mainly to the right-hand grip (see photos).
The japanning is wearing thin, with some surface wear around the brass prism plates and objective surrounds, mainly around the edges. The hinge still works perfectly, operating smoothly the entire range.This is a nice compact binocular, measuring minimum 4″ (11cms) long and 5″ (12.6cms) wide.
It comes with what appears to be it’s original neck strap and is stored in a hard leather case with shoulder strap. The case is slightly on the large size, so is almost certainly not original, but it is in good condition, with just a few surface scratches and blemishes. There is a tear to the leather hinge joining the lid (see photo), but it remains firmly attached, so offers good protection. Please note the straps may be over 100 years old, so obviously I cannot vouch on their strength and therefore they should not be relied upon.
