This pair of vintage opera/theatre glasses is in PRE-OWNED but ACCEPTABLE condition showing no signs of significant damage or external wear beyond a small crack in one of the tubes as can be seen in the pictures and does not interfere with use.
Believed to be manufactured some time between 1860 and the early 1900s, these opera/theatre glasses are made from a combination of brass and celluloid plastic which was finished to look like ivory, a popular practice at the time.
The lack of any makers marks or identifying information makes it difficult to give too many specifics.  We can say that they are very much in the style of London opera glasses with their three bridges and central focusing wheel, however as this style grew in popularity, it was copied around the World and we’ve seen similar pairs attributed to Japanese and French manufacturers so it is difficult to asses them based on the style alone.
The glass lenses are in superb order and show no chips, scratches or marks of any kind and offer a surprising level of image clarity, however the focusing wheel occasionally sticks or simply refuses to adjust the focal range.  This is likely due to some internal wear on the screw mechanism responsible for moving the bridges apart, it is still possible to adjust the focus by gently pulling the outermost bridges by hand as a temporary solution, however it would probably be better for someone in the know to repair or replace the worn component in the screw mechanism.
The glasses are housed in what is assumed to be their original leather case with green satin lining.  The case itself is slightly creased but in otherwise excellent condition and opens and closes perfectly.

All in all these glasses represent an interesting collectable for those interested in optics or indeed opera and the theatre.  They would also make an excellent restoration project for someone who is so inclined.
Highly recommended.
