Ref: DUThis is a nice pair of opera glasses, probably made in France c.1890. They come in their original soft leather case.
They are made of gilt brass and have bone (or similar) grips and eyecups (please look closely at photos). The grips have very nice decorative beaded borders, further enhanced by gilt brass milled edges. Similar detailing extends to the objective lens surrounds and focusing control.
Maximum dimensions (extended) are approximately 3 1/4″ long (8.4cms) and just over 4″ (10.2cms) wide. When closed they are 2 3/8″ long (6.1cm).Whilst they do not carry a maker’s name the are well made and typical of the glasses made in France (Paris?) towards the end of the 19th Century.Although not particularly powerful, overall they are in excellent condition for their age. The lenses are pretty clean, with just a few specks of dust inside, so may benefit from being cleaned, but there are no chips or cracks to the glass and no noticeable scratches or other issues.
They have a central thumbwheel focusing control, which works perfectly, so the tubes extend fully and smoothly in both directions.
The grips and eyecups are in excellent condition with with no chips or cracks. Whilst the beaded borders, each have a crack, the borders are very narrow, so are only noticeable on quite close inspection; they don’t detract greatly, but are mentioned for the sake of complete accuracy.
The brass and giltwork are in excellent condition, with just superficial surface wear (mainly to the tubes) and one or two feint scratches and blemishes, but no dents or other damage.The case is showing definite signs of age related wear and tear (see photos) but it is structurally sound, so still provides good protection to the glasses.Photographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need.This item will be sent by Royal Mail Tracked Delivery within the UK or Airmail Small Packets (International Signed For) if going overseas.CUSTOMERSERVICEWe take customer satisfaction very seriously and always strive to provde a Five Star service.
