“Tordalk” 15 x 80 observation binoculars serial number 194392. The company Christoph Beck & Sons (CBS) was founded in 1892 in Kassel, West Germany. From the early 1960’s onwards their “Tordalk” models, in 11x, 15x and 22 x 80 forms, dominated the market for high-power observation binoculars suitable for long-distance terrestrial viewing and also wide-field astronomy. The binoculars here for sale are the 15x power version, probably the best compromise between high power and still with a good field of view.
The binoculars are made to the usual high West German standards from the finest materials. Their huge 80mm objectives take in two and a half times as much light as 50mm glasses greatly aiding viewing even in reduced lighting conditions. And a nice feature is the dual focusing wheel meaning that fine adjustment is always easily to hand. These are big binoculars – overall length 280mm/11″ and weight 1775g/3.9lb but very well balanced for hand-held use. But for longer periods I am including a high-quality tripod adapter in the sale with non-marking jaws that clamp securely to the central spindle and with a standard 1/4″ photographic bush. The binoculars view very well indeed, the high power shrinking distances but the big lenses ensuring a consistently bright image.
These binoculars are in excellent overall condition for glasses of that era. Optics are crystal-clear with no fungus or haze and collimation is perfect. And both central focus and right diopter adjustments are silk smooth with no backlash or stiffness. All prisms and lenses are free from damage, chips or cracks. On reverse viewing a few tiny black specks are visible (probably paint flakes) and at the very edges of the field some small grease or rust marks. But these are totally invisible in normal use and do not effect viewing in any way. Lenses are free from cleaning marks and the blue coatings in fine order. I think that there is a tiny scratch on one object lens but again, not affecting viewing. Cosmetics reflect over 50 years of regular careful use. The leather covering is in fine order and the paint just showing normal light wear, mainly around the objective shrouds. New comfortable rubber eyecups have been fitted which fold down for spectacle users. The old original eyecups will be included in the sale.
The binoculars were sold new in the UK and so have a solid leather English case, case strap and black leather lanyard. A very fine example of this highly valued German classic glass. (“Tordalk” is German for “Razorbill”, a large seabird renowned for its strength and endurance.)
