The Marksman  3 Draw Brass Spotting / Stalking Telescope  J.H. Steward Ltd.  London
This Edwardian or possibly post WW1 / 1920s telescope represents a development from the earlier Rifleman and Lord Bury Telescopes by the same maker. The “Marksman” range was introduced just after the turn of the century and seems to have continued in production at least until the early 1930s. Since these telescopes were not allocated serial numbers, one can only rely on general condition for estimating approximate dates of manufacture. This seems quite early because it has a fixed sun-shield. Some later versions had sliding and even fully removable sun-shields.DESCRIPTION:
MAKERS MARKS:
‘MARKSMAN’     /    J.H.STEWARD Ltd    LONDON  /  Made in England

* An Edwardian or later 3 Draw Brass Spotting or Stalking Telescope presented in unrestored condition and good working order.
* Very finely machined and precise threads to all lenses. This is a high quality instrument.* Original dark patination to exposed brass sections.* Achromatic 1.5″ Objective Lens. The Crown and Flint Glass Lenses do not appear ever to have been separated. * Built-in Fixed Sun-shield* All leather cladding to barrel & sun-shield and the end caps and carrying strap appear original* Schryle-Huygens Four Lens Configuration housed within the First Draw. When the eyepiece  is unscrewed, it provides access to a removable short brass cartridge housing Lenses 1 & 2, both removable for cleaning. The cartridge fitted appears to be a fairly high-resolution one – probably about 30x.When the 1st Draw is uncoupled from the 2nd Draw, a second 2.25″cartridge containing Lenses 3 and 4 is accessible in the First Draw. Again, both lenses can be unscrewed and removed for cleaning.CONDITION:Absolutely superb. It is virtually in museum condition from both the cosmetic and functional points of view. The leather work is fine with all the original stitching firmly in place. There are a minor few age- and use-related scuffs to the surface.
All lenses are intact and clear. It focuses superbly.  All the brass draw tubes move smoothly and there is absolutely no damage.  All threads are finely and well engineered and unscrew easily to permit cleaning.FAULTS:
 There are no apparent faults.
DIMENSIONS:
Fully retracted:   11.5″  /  30cm    Fully extended:  32″ /  81.2cmWeight:  1.020kg       Plus end caps and strap: 1.104
SUMMARY:This is a finely preserved example of  a high-precision instrument in good working order. It would make a superb addition to any collection of period telescopes. It is in remarkably good condition for its age. It focuses easily and delivers good sharp images over quite long distances – just as would be expected from this famous and highly renowned maker.
