Ref: DUI am offering for auction an antique ZEISS Telact 8×24 Binocular, which comes in it’s original hard leather case.

It is of brass and alloy construction and carrys the serial number 306439 which dates it to 1912.

Mechanically, it is in excellent condition. It has eyepiece focusing and each rotates smoothly and fully in both directions, so the binocular still focuses well.

The central bar and hinge are in good working condition, so it opens and closes smoothly. Both Eyecups are in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips; just one or two feint scratches. The image is quite bright, but there is a bit of haze. Externally, the lenses are in good condition, with no major scratches; certainly no chips or cracks.

The prisms are intact and appear to be well aligned and in good condition. Apart from the aforementioned haze, internally this binocular is exceptionally clean, with little or no evidence of dust and no fungus that I can see. As the optics are not coated, a basic service would almost certainly bring them back to almost new condition.

Cosmetically, and for the age, this binocular is in really very good condition. There is some superficial wear to the lacquer finish, mainly to outside edges of the prism covers and the alloy bridge, but there is no evidence of corrosion or damage of any kind.

The leather grip/coverings are complete and also in excellent condition, with no shrinkage, splits or cracks; in fact they look almost new.

The neck strap looks to be original and in good condition, but due to the age of the leather, I cannot vouch for it’s strength. The binocular is clearly marked Carl Zeiss, Jena and carries the model name Telact 8x. It measures only 4 1/2″ (11.5cms) long and 5 1/8″ (13cms) wide (minimum measurements) so are quite compact. The binocular comes in it’s original leather case, which is in reasonable condition with good stitching, but a few scuffs/blemishes and the securing strap to the lid is missing and the hinge has been rivetted (see photos). It has a replacement canvass shoulder strap, which is perfectly serviceable, but please note one of the securing loops is also missing.

Once packed securely it will weigh approximately 1.4 Kg, which is reflected in my shipping costs.

Photographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need.
